Community Feature: North East Wake Backpack Buddies

At Hair Undone, we love giving back to our community. That is why this summer we are partnering with North East Wake Backpack Buddies to help raise funds to feed food insecure children in Wake Forest and Rolesville. Imagine leaving school on Friday afternoon and not having anything to eat until Monday morning.  This is a reality for some of the children in our schools.

Our goal is to provide healthy, balanced meals to children in our community who may go hungry over the weekend. Students we serve, who normally receive a free or reduced breakfast and lunch at school, no longer have to worry about where their weekend meals will come from allowing them to focus on their education.
— N.E.W. Backpack Buddies Mission Statement

The mission was started by Jeff Pethel, a youth minister at Rolesville Baptist Church, in 2006. In 2011, Backpack buddies became a 501 (c)3 non- profit separate from the church. They provide weekend meals and snacks every week to 400+ local children at 19 area schools. Each week they work to fill backpacks that contain kid-friendly food for six weekend meals, and snacks.

There are several ways to get involved in their organization. They need assistance with weekly packing on Wednesdays, driving and delivery to schools on Fridays, and a monthly pantry restock the first Saturday of every month. See more information and ways to volunteer, donate and more on their website.

This summer, we’ll be taking monetary donations at Hair Undone to help raise money for this amazing cause. Ask one of our associates for more information at your next appointment!
